Joint Statement On the Occasion of the 250th Anniversary of American Democracy | Youth Parliament – Sudan | U.S. Embassy Khartoum

Joint Statement
On the Occasion of the 250th Anniversary of American Democracy
Youth Parliament – Sudan
U.S. Embassy Khartoum
May 6, 2026

We—the “Youth Parliament – Sudan” & the “U.S. Embassy – Khartoum”—celebrate the bicentennial-and-a-half anniversary of the founding of democracy in the United States of America. We honor this momentous occasion as an inspiring human model—a testament to resilience, institutional innovation, and an unwavering faith in the capacity of societies to transform challenges into enduring pillars of democracy and freedom.

As we look ahead to the horizons of the “Silver Jubilee of Democracy,” this occasion serves, for us Sudanese, as a moment for reflection on our own national trajectory. Drawing inspiration from the lessons of the American experience in institution-building and upholding the rule of law, we reaffirm our shared commitment to a Sudanese future grounded in the very principles that have established democracy as an ultimate aspiration from which free peoples never waver.

Accordingly, through this joint initiative, we declare our commitment to the following fundamental principles:
– The Imperative of Peace and the Immediate End to Conflict: We affirm, with one voice, that the war of April 15, 2023, has depleted the country’s resources and torn apart its social fabric. We therefore call for an immediate and comprehensive cessation of hostilities, viewing peace as the sole and indispensable pathway to restoring the state, protecting civilians, and opening avenues for serious and constructive dialogue.
– Investing in National Capacities (Youth and Women): Recognizing the role of youth and women constitutes a strategic pillar of our operational approach. The Sudanese experience during times of crisis has demonstrated that youth—through their vitality—and women—through their resilience—are the driving forces behind national reconstruction. We therefore affirm that our partnerships will be dedicated to empowering these groups to lead the decision-making process.
– Our vision for reconstruction and institutionalization encompasses, among other things—recovery and relief support and extends to the building of a “state of institutions.” We are committed to working toward the development of legislative and administrative environments that ensure transparency, entrench the principles of good governance, and establish a resilient economy—drawing upon the technical and methodological expertise of the United States, as well as the will of the youth and the determination of women.
– Our celebration of the anniversary of American democracy serves as an expression of our shared belief that a “Sudan of Freedom, Peace, and Justice” is possible—and indeed inevitable. We pledge to continue working together, with the same spirit of partnership that unites us today, to serve as a bridge for international cooperation that advances the aspirations of the entire Sudanese people for freedom, justice, and prosperity.

We look toward the future with confidence—despite the bleakness of the present reality—recognizing that organized institutional action and strategic partnerships constitute the only path to steering Sudan toward safety, ensuring it remains a homeland worthy of the aspirations of its youth and the sacrifices of its women.
