Press Statement | Youth Parliament – Sudan Sends a Protest Letter to the African Union Commission Regarding the “Sudan–Sudan Dialogue” Initiative

The Secretary-General of the Youth Parliament – Sudan today, Tuesday, September 1, 2026, sent an official letter to the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security of the African Union Commission in Addis Ababa, expressing the Parliament’s strong objection and deep concern over the Commission’s position welcoming the “Sudan–Sudan Dialogue” initiative proposed by the Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council.

He emphasized that: “Our position does not stem from rejecting the principle of dialogue, which we consider essential to ending the war and achieving a comprehensive political settlement. Rather, it stems from the context in which this initiative was launched, the party behind it, and the extent to which the Commission’s welcoming of the initiative is consistent with the principles of the African Union and its stated positions on unconstitutional changes of government and inclusive political processes”.

The letter called on the African Union Commission to clarify the nature of its position on the initiative and to ensure that it does not become a parallel track to the ongoing political process or serve as a means of reproducing political legitimacy outside the framework of a comprehensive and consensual process.

The Secretary-General also called on the Commission to ensure that any future political process in Sudan is based on genuine inclusivity and equal participation of all civil, political, and societal forces, including youth, women, and local communities affected by the war.

He added: “We believe that the African Union can only fulfill its role as a credible sponsor of peace and stability in Sudan by remaining consistent with its own principles, refusing to treat the de facto situation as an alternative to constitutional legitimacy, and supporting a political process owned by the Sudanese people and not dominated by any party to the war”.

The letter concluded by reaffirming the Youth Parliament’s commitment to continued engagement with regional and international institutions concerned with Sudan, and to advocating for a comprehensive, civilian-led, and democratic political process that places the interests of the Sudanese people above the calculations of the parties to the conflict.
